Floating Heads by Sophie Cave

This unusual work of art shows over 50 floating heads, displaying many different emotions. There were many reasons I found this display so appealing. I think the initial reason was that it stood out so much in the traditional setting of the rest of the building. The heads are not particularly detailed - they are completely white - but the expressions they bear, which would otherwise be hidden, are highlighted with a faint blue light. The heads have a slightly eerie life-like quality. The expressions they display are some that we see on a daily basis in our society, ranging from laughter to sadness. This display is hung over the foyer and so it one of the first things your eye goes to. It was clear from the other visitors reactions that I was not the only person fascinated by this piece!
